The Board of Education is required approve the school calendar. The 2020-21 school calendar will not be posted on this page until it has been approved by the Board. Note that even when approved the Board can vote to change the school calendar at any time.
How does the calendar approval process work?
Each year Administration presents a proposed calendar to the Board for the following school year. When the proposed calendar is presented to the Board for the first time, the Board reviews the proposal and provides feedback to Administration. The proposed calendar then returns to a subsequent meeting for approval.
How long does it take for the Board to approve a proposed calendar?
The time it takes to approve a proposed calendar is at the discretion of the Board of Education. The least amount of time it could take is two, back-to-back Board meetings. For example, if a proposed calendar appears at the Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting, the earliest it could be approved is at the Regular Action meeting (RAM) two weeks later.
How can I follow the calendar approval process?
If you are a current school parent you automatically recieve notification of Board agenda items through an email called First Look, generally sent the Friday before a meeting. You also recieve a detailed summary of the COW and RAM items the day after the meeting. If you are not a current school parent, you can receive these same communications by joining the District 86 community email list here: https://d86.hinsdale86.org/Page/475. You can also see the calendar of regularly scheduled Board meetings and agenda items for all posted Board meetings here: https://d86.hinsdale86.org/domain/235.
Is there a general framework to the school calendar?
Yes. Since moving first semester final exams before winter break, the Board has generally followed the practice of starting school on the third Wednesday of August and ending school the last week of May with emergency days into the first week of June.
